Welcome once again to the WELCOME STUDENTS EducationGERMANY Newsletter!

A time to make friends...
This was the football world cup motto. As expected, the organization was satisfactory to all due to the proverbial German talent in such matters. However, the friendly openness and genuine passion with which the Germans welcomed their guests from all parts of the world was a surprise to many, including occasionally also to the Germans themselves. The happy, friendly atmosphere continued even after Germany came third. This positive global image of Germany will certainly also have positive effects on decisions to study in Germany.

We hope you enjoy reading your EducationGERMANY newsletter!

News & Service

Exclusive global cooperation with the Goethe Institute
From now on, WELCOME STUDENTS is an official global working partner of the Goethe Institute and will advise language students affiliated with all institutes on the topic "Study & Research in Germany". The Goethe Institute is the Federal Republic of Germany's globally active cultural institute. It supports the advancement of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural collaboration. Furthermore, the Goethe Institute conveys a comprehensive picture of Germany through information on its cultural, social and political life.

This working relationship will allow us to offer our students study placements that are even better organized than previously. They will be able to start acquiring basic knowledge of the German language at a Goethe Institute in their home country, which can then be intensified at one of the 12 Goethe Institutes in Germany before they commence their studies at their university. Further information on the Goethe Institute can be obtained on the Goethe Institute website.

Dr. EVA GLORIA VILLARREAL Y LÓPEZ
- New director for student affairs
Mrs. Zhandra Figueroa Coello directed the department for student affairs with great success until recently. Unfortunately, she has left our company for family reasons. We thank her for the pleasant and trusting collaboration and wish her all the best for the future. Dr. Eva Gloria Villarreal y López from Spain will be taking over the directorship. She studied chemistry at Malaga University. She carried out research at the Technical University Munich from 1999, where she was awarded her doctoral degree in 2004. She therefore has in depth knowledge of the foreigner's experience of studying, carrying out research and working in Germany. We are even more delighted to welcome her, as Dr. Villarreal y López not only has some knowledge of chemistry and management, but is very sociable and active artistically; flamenco is only one of many hobbies she pursues with great intensity.

University

The Freie Universität Berlin (FU) is one of the leading universities in the world and distinguishes itself through its modern and international character. It is also one of the largest universities in Germany, offering degree courses in more than a hundred subjects for 35 500 students – of which 15 per cent come from other countries. For many foreign scientists, too, such as fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Freie Universität is the university of preference while they are staying in Germany. Without including Medicine the Freie Universität is currently lead university for eight collaborative research centres of the German Research Foundation DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and also has three DFG research units. Because of the wide variety of subjects it offers, the Freie Universität also has two collaborative research centres in the humanities – for the first time in Berlin. Thirteen scientists of the Freie Universität have to date been awarded a Leibniz Prize of the DFG, the most important German prize for scientific achievements. The level of external funding acquired rose to more than EUR 55 million. This means that the Freie Universität canvasses a significant proportion of its income from third party funds. A strategic alliance has been concluded with the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in Munich. In addition, the Freie Universität cooperates closely with international companies such as BMW, Schering, Siemens, Deutsche Telekom and Pfizer.
