Humboldt University, Berlin
As a consequence of its experiences of self-renewal after 1989, Humboldt University is now considered to be an excellent example of a university that has reformed itself. The excellence in question relates to the self-image of an institution which has decided to maintain a critical distance from political and social powers. It is against any form of discrimination, intolerance or cultural superiority. This standard is laid down in the university’s charter, which was adopted in 2002.
Humboldt University is now divided up into eleven faculties, strong interdisciplinary centres, central institutes and graduate schools. With over 300 properties in Berlin and Brandenburg, it is one of the most important locational factors in the region. At present, approximately 36,000 students are registered at the university and in the Charité Medical University in Berlin. They study on the different campuses in Mitte, Adlershof and in the northern part of Berlin. Foreign students from than 100 countries across the world are currently learning and carrying out research in Humboldt University. They represent around 13% of the student body. As part of cooperation in the area of research, the university currently maintains partnerships with more than 170 academic institutions on all five continents.
As a reforming university in the area of excellence, the university has a modern management team with a full-time committee. The special way in which up-and-coming academics are supported, a professional system of quality assurance in the areas of research and teaching as well as future-oriented reforms of courses of studies are what make Humboldt University as the university of the capital city one of the leading German universities. Numerous ranking lists for institutes of higher education every year show how broadly the university is recognised on both a national and international level.
The university is not an elite institute of research and learning cut off from the outside, but also has an effect on the City of Berlin and its visitors. Its numerous historical buildings in particular now bear witness to its visitors of its history, which is rich in tradition, and its very promising present and future.
Despite its changing and turbulent history down through the centuries, Humboldt University has remained true to its principles related to unifying research and teaching.
